Be My Guest - Bunny and a Chicken Productions

Reviewed By Luke Dodge

“Be My Guest,” by Bunny and a Chicken Productions at the KC Fringe Festival, offers a unique twist on the talk show format. Instead of interviewing a celebrity, host De De DeVille invites an audience volunteer to be the guest, creating a refreshing and intimate experience.

The setup, reminiscent of old-school late-night television, is quaint and inviting. DeVille, with an impressive entrance, immediately puts the volunteer at ease, asking simple questions about favorite colors, horoscopes, and siblings. This warm-up helps create a comfortable atmosphere, making it easier for the volunteer to share their story.

DeVille expertly balances the conversation, sharing personal anecdotes to prevent the volunteer from feeling overwhelmed. This dynamic back-and-forth allows the audience to learn more about the volunteer gradually, moving from light-hearted topics to deeper discussions about sad memories and messages to loved ones who have passed. The result is a positively fascinating journey into someone else’s life.

The attentive and gracious hosting ensures the volunteer feels supported throughout, making the experience akin to a fireside chat. The show’s underlying message—that everyone is interesting if given the chance—shines through as the audience discovers the richness of a stranger’s story.

“Be My Guest” is proof of the power of human connection and the art of storytelling. De De DeVille’s skillful hosting and the show’s unique concept set it apart at the KC Fringe Festival. It is a heartwarming and engaging performance that leaves the audience with a deeper appreciation of the stories within us all.
