David Copperfield - Dickens Around Productions

Reviewed By Ethan Platt

Throughout history, queer narratives have been nullified or written in a masked manner full of euphemisms and codes. This show attempts to take a Dickens’ classic and highlight its true(?) queer nature. In less than an hour, Will Porter, directed by Vanessa Severo, manages to take the “old ass words” originally written in 1850 and create a fresh coming-of-age narrative while celebrating its latent queerness. Through audience participation, constant costume changes, and subtle tech, Will Porter crafts a ridiculously hysterical and touching tale. Although “David Copperfield” may be better known as the name of a magician, this show has more magic through deft storytelling and masterful acting.

Will Porter portrays the young David Copperfield, the caring maid Peggotty, the RBF-ridden Ms. Trotwood, and about 15 other characters included in this romp. His performance leaves no breathing room between laughs and audience participation, creating a magnetic energy that transports the audience into this magical one-person show with the ease of a true professional. The tightness of the timing, the quickness of his wit, and his ability to switch characters instantly are highlighted throughout.

“David Copperfield” should start with a warning to keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle throughout because this show is truly a roller coaster of the most controlled and beautiful chaos. If you fear audience participation, stay away for your own good. But if you love fast-paced, light-hearted, but profoundly moving performances, “David Copperfield” is a must-see.
