Teens on the Fringe
*Everyone who attends a performance or Late Night must have a Fringe Button. Buttons are $5 each and can be purchased anytime at the Fringe 411 office (theatre level of Union Station, across from the concession stand) or at any venue just before show time!
Teens on the Fringe 2017 officially begins with the art of Ahna Valdez and Hannah Harms.
Ahna Valdez (left) will have 10 pieces decorating the walls of the Johnson County Public Library, Cedar Roe branch starting July 5th. Special thanks to Joseph Keehn, II of the Johnson County Public Libraries.
The art of Hannah Harms (right) is on display at the Kansas City Missouri Public Library, Plaza Branch. Hannah also created the background artwork and logo for Teens on the Fringe. Special thanks to Kelsey Bates.
Friday, July 14 from 6pm - 8:30pm; Preview night at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. FREE event!
Teen performing begins with an evening of teasers at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Kirkwood Hall will host 10 minute teasers in rotation from VidaDance, O'Riada-Manning Academy of Irish Dance, Miles and Bella McMahon, KCYA's Ben Bloch and Lilah Cottrell and Improv with Tiffany Chappell.

Saturday, July 22 from 6pm - 11pm; Open Mic Night at the Kansas City Public Library: Plaza Branch, Truman Forum. FREE for performers, FREE for the audience.
Next up is the Teens on the Fringe Open Mic night. The evening begins with 2 hours of free workshops. There will be an Upcycling workshop where you will learn to reuse, redo and add art to your clothing. Added bonus, we will have volunteers with sewing machines on-hand to give you the basics you need to do what you want. For those who can't sit still there will be a Hip Hop workshop taught by Eric Upshaw. And for those who like to battle without all the blood, a stage combat workshop taught by Matt Rapport of the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival.
After the workshops KCYA's Garage Band will play as you find your seat to settle in for 2 hours of anything goes!
The evening will wrap with one last workshop. Want to feel comfortable being silly on stage? Try some improv taught by Tiffany Chappell.
And for those not ready to get up on that stage come in, have a seat and support the next generation of Fringe performers!

Expanded teen programming Sunday, July 23 - Sunday, July 30 at the new home of Kansas City Young Audiences, 3732 Main.
KCYA offered up their new home as a venue for Teens on the Fringe allowing expanded performance opportunities for teen groups looking for new audiences. Tickets will be $5 per show and don't forget your Fringe button! You can purchase buttons at the door for $5 and use that one button for the rest of the festival, Teen or regular. That $5 goes towards making Teens on the Fringe possible next year.
Tickets are on sale at KCYA ONLY 30 minutes before the show begins.

The evening begins with a screening of teen films from Reel Spirit and Blue Valley's CAPS program. Then stick around, buy another ticket (they're only $5!) and enjoy some theater by KCYA's Teen Fringe Troupe.

Saturday, July 29 from 1pm - 5pm
The day starts with improv. 2 local teen groups, KCYA Improv and Operation Show will do their best to make you laugh. Then buy another ticket and stay to see how funny a 453 year old playwright can be when brought to life by Team Shakespeare. Why not buy one more ticket and make a day of it? Might as well put that Fringe button to good use! You will not believe what the students from Lucia Aerial Performing Arts can do!

Our last day of Teens on the Fringe 2017 is round 2 for several performing groups. Missed them the first time? No worries, Sunday is your chance to catch the KCYA Teen Fringe Troupe, Team Shakespeare and the KCYA Improv show. Don't let the festival end without seeing these great groups!

Reaching The Write Minds - Teen Playwriting Workshop
To give a voice to emerging young writers, The Coterie Theatre is offering a teen playwriting seminar Saturday July 29th, in the 2017 KC Fringe Festival, based on Coterie Artistic Director Jeff Church's acclaimed program that he originated at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Students will learn to create settings, devise scenarios and build characters. Upon completion of this seminar with a Coterie professional playwright/facilitator, young playwrights will have devised a beginning scenario for a complete play and will have several fully written scenes. Following this seminar, participants may be selected to develop their plays at The Coterie's Young Playwrights' Roundtable.
Teen Playwriting Workshop
The workshop is 5 ½ HOURS long. It will start at 10:00am and end at 3:30pm, Saturday July 29th. The workshop will be held at The Coterie, 2450 Grand Blvd #144, KCMO 64108 (Crown Center). Available only for those entering grades 7-12. The workshop will be led by professional stage and screen actor, educator, and Coterie Theatre Master Acting class instructor Nancy Marcy.
Students should bring:
- Notebook paper
- Pen and/or Pencil
- A water bottle or beverage
- A snack for themselves
- A sack lunch or money to purchase one at Crown Center
There is a $10.00 registration fee to attend this workshop.
