The Black Card Experience - Katherene Garry

Kansas City audience members that remember “Let Me Explain My Blackness: Addressing Black Women’s Thoughts Through Comedy” from the 2019 KC Fringe Festival were surely thrilled to see a new show for 2023 from this amazing comedy writer! “The Black Card Experience: A Comedy Sketch Show” does not disappoint.
This talented cast zips from one sketch to the next, costume changes notwithstanding, barely leaving their audience with time to finish chuckling before the next belly laugh.
Built from conceptual black stereotypes, and being black enough to maintain black card status, the sketches take the audience to the Oscars, Brunch, an awkward family gathering, and much more. Of particular note is the R. Kelly sketch which turns into a sing-along, making the point that everyone loves what they love whether it’s popular, politically correct, or not. This is a theme throughout.
This performance is a wonderful opportunity for a good laugh at the performers, at yourself, and at the efforts required to maintain Black Card status. Recommended.
