Where is the Sparkle Room? Can’t find it on Google maps
The Sparkle room is in the same building as Westport Flea Market. You can park in the back and enter the same door as Westport Bowery. 817 Westport Rd, Kansas City, MO 64111
Laura is an expert storyteller that weaves together 3stories from different generations with similar themes.
I found the storytelling quite engaging. Laura has a nice style and presence and has woven the material into an enjoyable show.
We saw Saturday’s show and loved i!! Laura moves seamlessly between a traditional Baba Yaga tale from the old country with modern day personal stories. Then to top it off, she improvises awesome answers to audience questions. Best of the 3 shows we saw today!
Laura Packer’s show “Becoming Baba Yaga” was everything I hoped it would be…mesmerizing!! Laura weaves her personal experience and folktale into a seamless tale. I loved the sensory details.
I found the show quite engaging. Charmingly created and delivered. She’s a gifted storyteller.
I didn’t find this show until this past weekend and I’m heartbroken to be out of town for the rest of the showings!! Does anyone know if this will be at another Fringe festival or will be recorded?
Hi Julianna,
I will be at the Indy Fringe for the second and third weekend, doing the same show. I hope you can come!
Laura
First of all, to get the obvious out of the way — Laura is a master storyteller. The room is not without its challenges — the clatter and murmur of the bar next door is audible — and the audience was fully engaged throughout.
Beyond that, she’s built a structure here that plays to her strengths, alternating between folktale and memoir — and it’s not always clear where one ends and the other begins. Every time I felt my attention start to drift, she’d switch gears again, and I’d find myself in another time and place. There are layers to her relationship with this story, from her encounters with it in youth to her rediscovery of it in age, and there’s something a little thrilling to know that being in this audience makes you a participant in that discovery.
If you ever read in any description that an artist won Best in Fringe or Staff Pick (in Minneapolis, that depending on the year is second or largest Fringe in America), treat yourself to it.
Laura Packer is a master storyteller. She will make sounds, colors, tastes, sights, and adventures come alive.
You will feel that Baba Yaga is there with you, imparting her magic and life lessons. Laura will take you on a journey from her moves around the country and finding that Baba Yaga is never far behind.
After the main portion, there’s a QnA. In mine, Baba Yaga and Batman … (well, this supposed to be a PG show and a PG review).
Don’t delay getting your questions ready for this very talented lady. =)
Masterful storytelling and a brilliantly constructed tale!
Laura Packer is an amazing story teller. She creates a mood and stays with it for nearly an hour, without breaking character. She totally draws you into her character’s world. I heard her at a previous KC Fringe Festival and when I saw this year’s schedule I immediately marked this show as a must-see.
Wonderful storyteller and story that kept me wanting to hear more.
I thoroughly enjoyed Laura’s show, with its mix of folklore and personal story. She braids the voices of the child, the young woman and the crone together to create a strong piece that will stay with you long after you’ve left the Sparkle Room. Don’t miss it!
I love a great storyteller and Laura doesn’t disappoint.
She’s engaging and takes you along the journey with her.
Only one show left, tonight at 7:30.
The best show I’ve seen at Fringe. Absolutely fabulous! Highly recommended, must-see. A unique experience, beautifully performed.
Beautifully told! You will leave with a whole new sense of the story Baba Yaga. What is more important though is you will find yourself in the tale. Congratulations to a wonderful storyteller who takes you places you didn’t know you wanted to go.
I’d seen Laura’s Baba Yaga a few years ago, but she’s always so entertaining, I decided to see it again. Wow! She’s added so much, while being faithful to the original story, that I was enthralled! Such a pleasure to be transported by a true professional as she spins her web of fantasy, real life and beyond!
Thank Lady Laura for creating and sharing another powerful and engaging story. You’re a Master Storyteller and I am honored to be on your PATH to success. Thank you for developing a story that sets a tone and feeling of someplace else.
