My toes were tapping and my hands a clapping to this amazing show. Brother John always brings the audience to their feet and saying “Wow!!” Rick, Alex and Steven rounded out the program with great jazz. Hope there are tickets left so you can enjoy the show.
There’s a reason Brother John’s Fringe Festival shows have so much hype around them. No matter who he chooses to emulate, Brother John does not disappoint. Bob Marley, Sam Cooke, you name it. Brother John can do it all. But his particular affinity for old-school jazz, and the history behind it is what made this year’s presentation shine. Dressed to the nines in a Zoot Suit complete with chain, Br. John WAS Cab Calloway onstage. His choice of backing musicians was perfect. Alex Abromovitz played cornet as raw as anything you might have heard during the Pendergrast years. Rhythm section of Stephen Hicks on Bass and Rick Cole on Banjo held the back end. But at the end of the day. it was all about Brother John’s musical performance. “Minnie the Moocher,” “St. James Infirmary Blues,” all had the crowd engaged. In between the musical numbers there were interview segments that were slightly awkward but gave some nice insights to Calloway’s career as a musician. Definitely a top pick for Fringe Festival 2017.
Brother John is a gem!! Soul music and amazing storytelling all in one!!! Do not miss this!!
His Sam Cooke review was so good, a huge group of poets in the lobby thought they were listening to Sam himself, and had no idea it was happening live in the next room!! Wow!!!
GREAT SHOW! I am always amazed at the range of this man! From cowboy songs with kids to Sam Cooke to Bob Marley to Cab Calloway!– wow!!
And he pulls it all off beautifully. I LOVE Brother John’s voice and he is not just singing in his voice– whoever he honors with a show is done flawlessly, as he has obviously put in the time to study their voice and gestures..
There is the music and then there is the interview section, where you get to really understand the artist in his own words.
Backed up by talented musicians playing live.
I highly recommend this show.
Come for the music — stay for the HISTORY: We all need to know these stories and songs!
This was a very energetic, informative and enjoyable performance. Well done. We look forward to seeing you next year. ?
I think the folks above have said it all. Great concept, and well done for promoting a genius years ahead of his time! The band were really good too. Where does Br John get his energy from? Please pass some on to me! A very enjoyable show which you could watch, over and over again. Only one small criticism, I found John’s voice through the mic too loud, but that is a minor point. If this show wins its venue contest, please go and see it tomorrow (Sunday). While you are at it, grab a Parisi Breve coffee and chicken BLT wrap upstairs; wonderful food and drink. I really like this venue!
Brother John & his band are truely ama?ing! Truely brougth Cab Calloway to life. ✌?
Brother John and his three-man band keep the crowd captivated with knockout number after knockout number of Cab’s signature style. This year’s Fringe was the sweet spot of venue, material, and energy for Br. John. This was his best showcase yet, my personal favorite being his nuanced and soulful delivery covering “Stormy Weather.” I had heard him sing before, but he has taken his showmanship to a new level. Can’t wait to see what he serves up next. –a fan from 3,000 miles away.
