Bi Spy - Csquared Productions
Reviewed By Taylor Hudson
“Bi Spy” is a tongue-in-cheek noir, spy comedy produced by Csquared productions. Set at the height of the Cold War, newlywed spies played by Jen Raines and Chris Cole are tasked with recovering a missing security parcel. Through their adventure they encounter familiar scenarios and archetypes of the genre like Dr. Makarov, the mysterious femme fatale played by Caylee Smith. The cast is rounded out with other Csquared veterans who are clearly having a great time dropping clever one-liners and hitting on all the classic noir tropes.
While there are plenty of laughs throughout, an unfortunate lack of clear direction lets the story and delivery play out like a rehearsed improvisation and left me unsure about plot details. The prop jokes were a nice touch, but the set pieces were awkward, and their placement had actors unnecessarily squeezing through tight spaces. Highlights include spot-on sound choices, playful costumes, and a steady and sure performance from Jen Raines who rises above the chaos.
