Sketches from the Fourth Dimension: 4 Sketches Performed 4 Times! - The Bird Comedy Theater
Reviewed By Chris McCoy
It is literally impossible for me to review this show without giving away why it is so great. The description of the show states, “four sketches performed four times each!” However, it is the establishment of this expectation and the breaking of it that makes this comedy so surprisingly fun, funny, and an entirely enjoyable and clever performance.
The show begins with Cody and Forest entering the stage in t-shirts emblazoned with their names who proceed to explain the premise for the show. Their “Improv Boyz” persona and slightly nerdy humor make them immediately endearing to the audience. We learn that they only wrote four sketches for this show due to laziness and will indeed perform them four times each… or will they?
The skits have understandably simple plots: two guys meet on a patio while a party goes on inside, a group of young women at a wedding shower, and two new roommates moving in together. What the writers of this show understand (even better than SNL) is that most sketch comedy has a funny idea as its premise and a few good jokes. They reflect this understanding with quick pacing, unexpected plot twists, and clever meta-commentary on the form of sketch comedy itself. With pop culture references to reality television, 1990s sitcoms, Gotcha journalism, low budget TV commercials, and Pirandello’s “6 Characters in Search of an Author”, this show truly takes sketch comedy into the fourth dimension.
