Sound Mandala - Sound Mandala

Reviewed By Poppy di Candeloro

Sound Mandala, a mesmerizing auditory experience featured at the KC Fringe Festival in the intimate setting of the Olson PAC Black Box Theatre, defied traditional performance norms to offer a profoundly immersive journey into the harmony of sound.

The Black Box Theatre, unusually intimate with seating for approximately 50 people at its center, was bathed in soft golden light from above. Its minimalist black walls were adorned with dozens of strategically placed speakers, setting the stage for an unconventional sensory experience.

At the heart of the event was the 'sound mandala' itself — a dynamic arrangement of sounds and melodies guided by a narrating voice that evolved fluidly throughout the performance. Each note and rhythm felt meticulously crafted to resonate not only through the ears but also deeply within, creating moments of meditative introspection and urging listeners to awaken.

While traditional visual representations of a mandala were absent, the circular motif was cleverly echoed in the seating arrangement, forming rows of 7-9 chairs to suggest a circular shape. This design choice, coupled with the spatial arrangement of the speakers in a circular fashion around the room, enveloped the audience in a surround-sound experience that alternated between familiar tunes (Pac-Man theme song anyone?) and novel auditory landscapes.

In essence, Sound Mandala at the Olson PAC Black Box Theatre embodied the spirit of the KC Fringe Festival: innovative, thought-provoking, and refreshingly unconventional. It offered attendees an opportunity to engage deeply with sound in a way that challenged expectations and invited exploration of new auditory realms.
