National Poetry Slam poet Mike Shaeffer brings a unique twist to the classic action film "Die Hard" with his one-person show, "Thy Hard: A Shakespearean Reimagination of Die Hard." This inventive performance at the Kansas City Fringe Festival masterfully blends the explosive excitement of "Die Hard" with the eloquent language of Shakespeare, resulting in a hilarious and captivating theatrical experience.
Armed with a suitcase full of cheap props and wigs, Michael Shaeffer takes on the roles of all the major characters from "Die Hard" while also serving as the narrator. Charlie Pautler occasionally interrupts the performance with his backstage voice, providing unsolicited advice. While this banter adds a layer of meta-commentary, it sometimes distracts from the main act, Shaeffer's brilliant transformation of "Die Hard" scenes into Shakespearean sonnets and soliloquies.
One of the most memorable moments of the show is when Shaeffer, in a Shakespearean style, impersonates Alan Rickman's Hans Gruber, eliciting uproarious laughter from the audience. The clever adaptation of scenes into Shakespearean verse not only showcases Shaeffer's deep understanding of the source material and the Bard's works but also the audience's delight in the creative parallels.
Although a refresher on "Die Hard" enhances the experience, Shaeffer provides enough context for newcomers to follow along and appreciate the humor.
For "Die Hard" fans, the show offers a fresh, laugh-out-loud perspective on familiar scenes. Those who appreciate both "Die Hard" and Shakespeare will find even greater enjoyment in the witty, well-crafted sonnets. "Thy Hard" is an innovative and entertaining show catering to a diverse audience.
