The Greatest Garage Sale Ever - Danielle Ate the Sandwich

Reviewed By Karen Staehling

Danielle Anderson, known for her folk music sensation Danielle Ate the Sandwich, makes a spectacular KC Fringe debut with "The Greatest Garage Sale Ever." This one-woman comedy cabaret features Anderson playing four distinct characters, each brought to life through original songs and endearing performances. The show celebrates the power of nostalgia to remind us of who we are, what we love, and what we've lost, all while examining the not-so-pleasant parts of being human through silliness and song.

The show's structure is particularly creative and engaging. Each character is first introduced through a video screen, where we see them shopping at a garage sale. The items they examine, and their reactions reveal their personalities and quirks. Each character selects a "treasure" from the sale, transitioning from video to live stage as they walk out with their chosen item. This seamless video-to-real-life transition is a brilliant storytelling technique.

Each character shares stories and songs about their garage sale find on stage, with Anderson accompanying herself on guitar or ukulele. The lyrics are a delightful mix of bittersweet and hilarious, with catchy and creative tunes. The audience couldn't help but sing and tap their feet along with the music, especially the memorable turtle song, which this reviewer hummed on the way out.

Audience participation adds an interactive dimension to the performance, and the enthusiastic responses from the crowd showed their love for Anderson's engaging style. Her ability to connect with the audience and bring her characters to life is awe-inspiring.

"The Greatest Garage Sale Ever" stands out at the Kansas City Fringe Festival. Danielle Anderson's creativity and talent shine through in this must-see show, making it a highlight of this reviewer's Fringe experience. Whether you're a comedy, music, or heartfelt storytelling fan, this performance offers something for everyone.
