All Ages Shows
BELLY DANCE ON THE FRINGE: A CINDERELLA STORY • GAZIYEH ENTERPRISES & 1001 ARABIAN NIGHTS
It’s pretty much the story we all know and love, but this origin tale from Egypt has a few subtle differences. The cast will illustrate the tale with a narrative, music and dance to fill the senses with love, light and beauty. It’s an all ages show with something for everyone.
ECHO AND NARCISSUS • TRILOGY CULTURAL ARTS: CIRQUE DE L’AIR CASCADES
Mild violence and sexuality
This is the Greek Mythology Story of Echo and Narcissus. Our goal is to produce art at The Fringe that can be enjoyed by school age children through adults. All choreography and costumes are family friendly and appropriate.
AN EVENING WITH JELLY ROSE • JELLY ROSE
Jelly Rose performs music that can be enjoyed by people of all races, ages, religions, sexes and any other classification. Songs with purpose, meaning and good stories.
FANGIRLS (AN IMPROBABLE COSPLAY) • BRICK STREET THEATRE
We do mention sexual harassment in subtext and mention the male gaze. The sexual harassment scene is written in such a way as to give the information to the adults but go over heads of children. My 8-year-old child has seen it multiple times.
FEET TO THE FIRE: YOUNG DANCE ARTISTS IN THE MIDWEST • YOUNG DANCE ARTISTS IN THE MIDWEST
The show is entirely dance and should be fun and interesting for arts patrons of all ages.
JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS: A MUSICAL ADVENTURE • OLIVE JUICE THEATRE
During our show, along with tons of audience participation, we pull youth up from the audience to participate in our musical tale. They become Greek Heroes and are the ones to help defeat monsters and help Jason find the legendary Golden Fleece! This show is most specifically for kids (6 to 12) but the adults enjoy it too as we bring kids onstage and interact with everyone the entire time. Also, the writing has a cleverness the parents will enjoy.
SCRIPT TO THE BONE • MICRO BUDGET PRODUCTIONS
Mild violence and sexuality
Kids will love the physicality of the show but the adult content will go over their heads. Teenagers and adults will love it!
SONGZ OF EARTH’S MOTHER • YESHIMEBET THE MAMA LION
This show is also a History lesson for one and for all.
STORY OF THE CENTURY • DAVID O. HILL WITH SARAH HILL
This is a strictly G-rated and family friendly performance with no profanity, sex or violence. Adults will enjoy the historical context and historical references comparing 1902 to the present. It’s a lively show and the costumes are from the Mary Poppins/ 101 Dalmatians era, and it’s based on a fanciful flying machine. Elementary age children and up will enjoy it.
Teens & Up
ACROSS THE BROADS: FILMS FROM A FEMALE PERSPECTIVE • MEAGAN FLYNN
Sexuality, language, substance use, and mild violence
The rating of most of these films is from G to PG-13. Mild swearing and sexuality in some of the shorts. Nothing excessively violent (no blood and gore). Adult humor in several.
DANCING WITH CROWS FEET • ARTS AND AGEING IN KANSAS CITY
Sexuality, language, mild substance use
This show centers on the lived experiences of senior women. While there is nothing that is terribly inappropriate for a child, it does openly discuss the very real and sometimes traumatic events that can happen to people, especially women. It is unlikely that a young child would be able to grasp the magnitude of what is being discussed, though an older teen should be able to.
ELECTORAL DYSFUNCTION 2016 • RIGHT BETWEEN THE EARS
Show is very topical. While the humor doesn’t depend entirely on one’s knowledge of current events, it’s helpful. Small children will probably have no idea what the hell is being talked about.
MACDUO • 3 CRAZY SONS
Mild violence, mild sexuality
The Porter’s speech is lewd. It may or may not be understood by children. All violence is stylized and not graphic.
MAMALOGS • DEBBIE FROM
Sexuality, language, mild violence
Mamalogs is a series of stories/monologues. Some of the stories are perfectly fine for all ages, but there are a few with adult themes and language. It is really up to the parent to make the decision, because they know their child best.
PISSING ON THE GREAT WALL • MAXIMUM VERBOSITY
Strong language, substance use, mild violence, mild sexuality
Quite a bit of drinking and swearing in this one.
RUMORS OF SHADOWS • KINETIC FUSION
Mild violence, mild sexuality, mild substance use
If you would let your kids watch Tales from the Crypt, bring them.
SECOND LADIES • HEIDI VAN
Strong language, sexuality
This play is as controversial as any other conversation about politics and American History. Viewed through the lens of the millennial generation we discuss the role gender plays in politics and power.
SENECA: A JOURNEY THROUGH SPACE AND TIME • AMANDA DAVISON
The show, although not risqué or explicit, deals with advanced emotional and philosophical themes that would be most appreciated by either older children or mature children. There is music and singing and some special effects.
THE LUPUS CHRONIC(SLE) • RYAN HRUZA
The only ratings qualm is with language. There is loud music and some heavy themes, not for children but teenagers would enjoy it.
THE TRICKSTER SHOW • PRISCILLA HOWE
Strong language, substance use, mild violence
There’s some scatalogical content teens will like and parents may cringe at.
AN UNCOMMON CORE • THEATRE 102
Trigger warnings (issues are talked about): sexual assault, police brutality, anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination, suicide and mental health concerns, school violence, and adult language (very limited).
WORDS + MUSIC • LYRIC OPERA/COTERIE/UMKC
We have some cussing in two of the pieces, plus the use of a fake cigarette and references to drinking.
