About the writer/performer: An award-winning improviser, playwright, actor, and stand-up comedian, Jamie Campbell was specially-selected by the sister of the late Andy Kaufman to perform at the TBS Just For Laughs Festival. His debut comedy album, Tell Me You’re Proud of Me, debuted at #1 on Amazon’s comedy charts. He has been seen on television in various commercials and has appeared on NBC’s Chicago Fire and Pop TV’s Hollywood Darlings. He is one of the stars of the cult favorite webseries Lunch and Learn, which has millions of online views, and plays the titular role in the upcoming first season of The Mr. Stone Show.

This is a very impressive one-man performance. Campbell utilizes his booming voice and masterful story-telling skills to narrate a coming-of-age tale that is equal parts nostalgia, humor and drama. He deftly handles some pretty dark subject matter… abuse, rape, custody disputes and kidnapping and often shifts from hilarious to heartfelt in the span of seconds. It is a brave performance that is unflinchingly honest. He is not afraid to shine the spotlight on his own lowest moments, as well. I found myself riveted for the whole hour waiting to see how the whole story unfolded and, to be honest, would have probably liked to hear more even though the story ends at a good point. If you want to laugh and cry on a roller coaster of emotions, it’s hard to imagine a better one-hour show at the Fringe Festival.
Definitely a must-see Fringe show. Touching, shocking and funny. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. The courage that it must have taken Jamie to put this show together is amazing. Inspirational and heartbreaking.
It’s not often I feel privileged to see a show, but this is one of those times. A heartbreaking true story of a childhood I’m not sure how he survived, Jamie Campbell bares his soul in such a raw and powerful way I can only describe as beautiful. An emotional ride with highs and lows you shouldn’t miss.
I saw the world premier of Jamie Campbell’s “The Devil on the Wall” at The Buffalo Room Friday night. It is a must see show of this year’s KC Fringe. His performance is powerful. I was laughing hysterically one minute, then caught up with the rest of the audience in one of those silences that owns you. I sat unable to look away from the scenes he unfolded before our eyes. Masterful emotional roller-coaster storytelling. Go see it. That’s all I got.
Powerful and affecting, this one man show invites the audience into a roller coaster of emotion and experience. Worth seeing, worth talking about, worth taking as inspiration to make a difference in the world.
Jamie Campbell brings raw powerful vulnerability to the stage as he tells his story. I couldn’t take my eyes away from the stage as I listened to this story. It was a last second addition to my Fringe plans but it is a show I will not soon forget.
Jamie Campbell’s show was very emotional. He has you laughing, then the next moment, the room is silent and you feel your eyes watering up. I would defiantly recommend this show.
My first Fringe show for 2017 and likely my “best of Fringe” vote. Outstanding. Highly recommended. Jamie Campbell is an incredible storyteller with a very powerful story. I am not normally a big fan of single-performer/spoken-word shows, but this one is definitely worth the trip.
This show right here gave me all the feels. Laughter, shock, sadness, anger and then more laughter. Jamie has to be one of the bravest performers to bare his soul and his story for all of us in the audience. Everyone should make the time to see this show – you will be so glad you did.

Having seen Jamie perform with the KC Improv Company, I knew this show would be good. But damn, he went from funny to heartbreaking and back to funny with incredible skill and honesty. He doesn’t hold back. There were times I had to look away and found myself holding my breath because the emotion and the violence he was describing were just too real. I cannot recommend this show enough. Do not miss this one!

My first ever Fringe show and I absolutely loved it! Jamie is a wonderful story teller and I really felt every emotion he exemplified during this one man show. Thank you Jamie for sharing your touching story and it gave me tools on how to handle touch life situations.
Jamie masterfully balances the heartbreaking details of his tumultuous childhood experiences with comic levity and audience engagement. The entirety is entertaining and cathartic for more than just the artist who presents the story with an authentic charm.
I was absolutely riveted during this show. It was hard to believe an hour had gone by! Jamie does an amazing job weaving storytelling and comedy, all the while being incredibly present and vulnerable. I can’t recommend it enough!

Jamie Campbell’s story was the absolute BEST performance I’ve seen at the Fringe insix years and over 120 events.
His life story is painful and honest and hilarious. If you loved reading the Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls (the Brie Larson movie opens in August) then you will totally embrace Jamie Campbell. He is a world class storyteller–hairpin emotional shifts–from shame to elation. A superlative command of his voice–grabbed my heart and my attention–I wish it had been two hours long. Jamie knows the power of silence–he let the “aha” moments reach in and grab me.
His portrayal of family members is so vivid–I feel like I know his cousin Mark, his Dad, his Mom, his stepmother Susan. If I ever ran into them on the street, I’d want to just talk with them, too. (How rare is that–a performance so powerful it extends into my imagined future??)
Even without the stories of spousal abuse and custody battles, Jamie shines a light on what it’s like to grow up poor. Things I never thought about before, like the pride in family, or your new pair of shoes–since that’s all they have. It’s been so long I forgot about that. It shook up and disrupted my (Johnson County) suburban malaise.
I would listen to Jamie Campbell tell ANY story in the future. I’d like to follow him around a Walmart and just listen to him and his take on America. This performance earned a well deserved standing ovation. Like other reviewers above, I felt a sacred sense of being privileged to hearJamie Campbell’s story. It needs to be shared. Nationally.
