Description:

International performer Michelle Matlock, brings her hit show The Mammy Project: Untold History of Nancy Green to KC Fringe.

Through original music, circus, storytelling and Michelle, weaves the story of her personal experience in the performance industry, the life story of Nancy Green ( the first African-American woman hired to play the part of "Aunt Jemima" ) and an exploration of the icon of the "Mammy" in this funny, and thought provoking performance. The Mammy Project transforms an oppressive stereotype into a celebration of the power we gain from knowing and understanding our history. Each show features a talk-back with the audience and the artist.

Artist Statement
The Mammy Project is an innovative and thought-provoking artistic endeavor, comprised of a series of monologues that delve deep into the enduring impact of the "Mammy" stereotype on contemporary American culture. My purpose in creating this show is to reimagine and dissect the cultural origins from which this stereotype emerged—namely, slavery, minstrelsy, and advertising. Through this exploration, I aim to push the boundaries of our collective perceptions and challenge preconceived notions. This creative journey has allowed me to fuse my talents in acting, clowning, movement, and writing into a cohesive artistic process. Moreover, it has provided a platform for me to express my own identity and beliefs. Currently, my aspiration is to take The Mammy Project wherever it is welcomed. My objective extends beyond the mere presentation of the show; it encompasses sparking conversations about race, stereotypes, history, and their profound relevance in contemporary American life. It is undeniable that The Mammy Project is provocative and, to some, controversial. However, my intention is not to merely provoke but to educate, entertain, and, most importantly, unite us the tough questions surrounding race in America. I firmly believe that the dialogue generated by this show will leave a lasting impact long after the curtains close and the stage is dismantled. My hope is that, through this project, we can continue to bridge divides, fostering a more inclusive and understanding society.
Michelle Matlock, creator of Circle Up Productions, has the honor of being the first African American Woman to create a main character for Cirque du Soleil. For close to 10years, she toured the globe in Cirque's OVO. Prior to Cirque du Soleil, Michelle spent 15 years as a performing artist, teacher and producer in New York City. During that time, she toured her critically acclaimed solo show The Mammy Project across North and South America and had the pleasure of working in the NY Theater and the International circus scene, she played with Big Apple Circus, Circus Amok and The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus.

“Writer and performer Michelle Matlock blows the lid off this century-old pancake box in her must-see one-woman show about a former slave named Nancy Green, who found everlasting fame as the smiling face of Aunt Jemima. There are scenes and images in The Mammy Project that will stick to your heart.”

-Adrienne Cea, Off-Off Online

“You will be intellectually provoked by Michelle Matlock's wit, politically afire by the shrewd use of her craft for commentary but, more importantly, you will be moved to laughter and tears.."

Michele Matlock is a marvel to watch – she covers all the emotional bases exceptionally. And the play itself is a riveting look at what Black women have had to confront for centuries. It’s a memorable experience.

This show was BRILLIANT!! It was so good, I saw it twice, and brought folks with me the second time. To my surprise, I learned even more and took even more away from the show after seeing it a second time. Even though the subject-matter is complex and part of all of us in some way, Ms. Matlock manages to call the audience in, evoking laughter, empathy, anger and so much more. It also serves as a history lesson for little known events in U.S. history. Additionally, the talk-back really helped me synthesize everything I absorbed during the show. Everyone should see this show, so I hope Ms. Matlock is able to share it with people in other cities.
