Down My Rabbit Hole - Abby Bland

Reviewed By Karen Staehling

From the creative mind behind "Godzilla's Not a Dinosaur" (Best of Venue, 2023), Abby Bland returns with a fresh blend of comedy and poetry in her latest show. This time, she is wearing floppy bunny ears while talking about the quirks of living both online and in the real world. Bland takes her audience on a wild ride through topics like dating as a femme, growing up in the Midwest, and leaving the church, all while sneaking in a rabbit vibrator joke that will raise an eyebrow or two.

Bland's clever writing shines through with jokes that loop back unexpectedly, creating a satisfying sense of continuity. Themes of body image and self-improvement appear throughout the performance. Her use of metaphors is particularly striking, adding depth to her humor and beauty to her poetry. Despite occasional interruptions from the Bird Comedy Theater's overzealous air conditioning, Bland's delivery remained engaging and poised.

Bland's approachable personality and relatable anecdotes make her an endearing presence on stage. Her self-deprecating humor, combined with the show's varied content, ensures that the audience is always entertained and never quite sure what to expect next. In this delightful mix of comedy and poetry, Abby Bland again proves why she's a standout performer at the Kansas City Fringe Festival.
