Between Breathe and Sky

reviewed by Dawn Youngs

Denver Aerial Dance Collective returned to the KC Fringe with its newest production, “Between Breath and Sky”, an impressive blend of contemporary dance, ballet, and aerial artistry.

The production demonstrated that simplicity can be extraordinarily effective. Flowing gauze and chiffon fabrics in soft pastel tones caught the light beautifully, enhancing the dancers’ movements both on the ground and in the air.  The troupe of performers were all nearly identically dressed evoking a Greek chorus.  There were several simple costume changes that added dramatic effect particularly paired with the lighting to create luminescence.

The continuous piece of choreography flowed between dance on the floor and aerial artistry. Classical ballet influences, including elegant pointe work, provided a graceful counterpoint to the synchronized aerial sequences, emphasizing both strength and delicacy.

The production made striking use of three aerial points.   Throughout the performance, the apparatuses were shared among the performers, reinforcing themes of connection and community rather than individual display. One of the evening’s most memorable images featured three aerialists stacked vertically on the aerial silks, creating a living totem that embodied both unity and transcendence.

Denver Aerial Dance Collective delivered a production that was technically impressive and emotionally resonant.  The production was an extraordinary display of skilled teamwork and collaboration.  Through its graceful fusion of dance and aerial performance, the company invited the audience to breathe deeply, look upward, and reflect on the beauty found in movement between earth and sky.
