FringeProv had the unenviable task of replacing another act for a show at Center for Spiritual Living. You’d expect a show that took its time getting into a groove. Instead, we got energy, energy and more energy as two teams of improv performers hit the ground running, doing their impressions of other acts at this year’s Fringe Festival. Audience members drew rolled up playbills of other acts at the festival. Ironically, the first team drew their own FringeProv placard.
What followed was Rocky Horror Picture Show style improv with hats as props and a critic who gave out points while commenting that you can never go home again. Hats that dominated the props department included a baby, a cop spanking a skunk, and a team member taffy pull. Other gigs included a ½ sister and ¼ brother inheritance reading and HR training for a zookeeper who wanted to be a zoo owner.
By the time we got to bagel rhymes and the black void of the bagel being played like 2001 a space odyssey and soup!, another improv troupe being riffed as a bowl of tomatoes and other vegetables , the critic had added up points for pirouettes and wacky entrances like another improv show where the points don’t matter. Laughter scored the most points.
