Every night brings a different lineup of short films from Kansas City filmmakers, making each screening its own one-time event. That unpredictability turns the program into less of a traditional show and more of a cinematic grab bag.
The variety is what sticks. This particular screening dealt a pretty great hand. Two filmmakers took the exact same script in completely different directions, showing just how much a director’s vision can reshape the same material. There was a hilarious fake livestream from a satirical pastor, complete with an unhinged live chat, all pulled off in a single take. A dialogue-free story bathed in Polaroid colors captured the feeling of childhood summers, while a documentary featuring young people with invisible disabilities offered interviews that were quietly powerful. A few films disappeared almost as soon as they began, leaving a wish to spend a little longer in their worlds, but that’s part of the charm and the gamble, keeping each new title feeling like another surprise waiting to be revealed.
The only disappointment comes from the venue itself. Loud fans and muddy acoustics occasionally overpower quieter moments, making it harder for these films to shine the way they deserve. Sitting near the front and center helps.
For anyone who loves movies, “IFCKC Presents” offers something rare: a snapshot of what local filmmakers are creating right now. You won’t see the same films this reviewer did, but that’s exactly what makes buying a ticket feel like opening a mystery box.
