It’s Not Over Till the Legends Sing
Reviewed by Laurie Austin

At a Br. John (John Anderson) show, no one seems to have more fun than Br. John himself. His infectious joy quickly spreads, igniting the crowd with the same energy and enthusiasm he brings to the stage.

This KC Fringe stalwart has introduced us to the world of Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye and the legends of Motown. In this year’s show, “It’s Not Over Until the Legends Sing Part 2: Back to Love,” he speaks about love and life while treating his audience to a variety hit songs.
Staged with just a music stand and a microphone at the KC Oasis, Br. John speaks wistfully about love in the literal and figurative sense. He rolls through Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do For Love” Nat King Cole’s “L-O-V-E” and Brian McKnight’s “Back to One,” with equal aplomb.

The show takes a serious turn when he speaks about a harrowing incident, but even then, he brings it all back to joy with a rollicking version of Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life.”

Audience participation isn’t mandatory, but once you’ve seen Br. John’s air guitar on “The Power of Love,” you’ll be hard pressed to stay in your seat. And dancing is encouraged.
