Out of town comic Gabbie Watts warns at the top of this show: this is political satire. Conservatives be warned, and liberals get ready. She then jumps into character as MAGA Pop Girly, on a quest to be named the next Secretary of Pop Music. This show is so silly, while also being culturally responsive to the deeply unserious political moment in America today.
DEI, MAHA, the second amendment, not a single conservative trope that can be twisted into anything funny is left on the table. Gabbie levels up what would be an already entertaining stand up set with the inclusion of this over-the-top character and musical numbers. One song, dedicated to men with podcasts, had me literally laughing out loud at both the comic genius and actual insanity happening in our real world.
Fringers understand, art is what will get us though any difficult time. While doing this type of show in Missouri might have been scary for Maggie and her comedic assistant/sidekick Marietta Mendler, the audience was with her the whole way. It didn’t feel overly heavy or cerebral, and it also didn’t make light any of the realities of living in this country right now. Satire is an American art form, rooted in constitutional free speech, and MAGA POP Girly is an expert.
I’m left with only one question: are my favorite sunglasses actually conservative coded?
