When we first meet grandma, she is explaining how the dermatologist can wait, explaining why she wears a turtleneck, and pulling off one set of sunglasses to reveal, surprise!, another set of sunglasses. What follows is essentially a one woman show with news breaks that explains what it’s like to grow older and maintain connections with your family even when they want to ship you off to space.
The Bob Newhart gig with the telephone made for several hilarious moments. As did the question and answer bit with the audience in discovering the very best restaurant in town. In fact, grandma’s ability to connect with the audience is really the high point of the show.
We’re told that grandma is the mother of your mother and the mother of your father. There is a very sweet musical number with grandma on the guitar. By the time we get to grandma invoking her inner Billy Idol singing and driving in space, the hook is in. Everybody loves grandma and grandma surely loves us although that phone call from her grandchild’s mother is still awaiting.
The audience at this performance laughed and laughed hard. And they sang along to the many musical numbers. Something tells me they won’t forget to call grandma when they get home.
