I had high hopes for “No Place Like Home” at the Black Box as someone who has lived and raised a family in Kansas City. Performer and author Nick Mangiaracina shares stories of growing up in the Kansas City area: he attended Shawnee Mission South High School, ate Meshuggah bagels, hung out at Winstead’s. Unfortunately, the performance was not memorized but read from his phone preventing the stories and musings from really coming to life. The performer also spoke very fast and needed to project more making him sometimes hard to understand. While the idea is great for sharing Kansas City stories, the show could have used more preparation and direction.
