“Serenades: A Musical Thank You” by Br. John Storytime at the KC Oasis
The talent, charm and positivity effused by Brother John “Storytime” Anderson are nothing short of infectious. The joy he feels from singing carries through the room and throughout several decades and genres: In “Serenades: A Musical Thank You,” Br. John performs classics by Otis Redding, deep cuts by Marvin Gaye and Bob Marley, pop staples by Kenny Loggins and Barry Manilow, all with precision and gusto.
Fringe goers who are looking to maximize their day should be advised: Anderson (being a gifted motivational speaker) loves to chat with and interact with his audience, and his opening Fringe performance ran slightly over time. If there’s a show you must drive across town to see, perhaps don’t schedule it directly after “Serenades.”
That said, John is a veteran of the KC fringe for good reason, and any fan of Motown and classic R&B should prioritize his performances on their Fringe docket, now and in the future.
