KC Fringe Review: Kansas City: Magnum Vice

review by Dawn Youngs

“Kansas City: Magnum Vice”, now playing at KC Fringe, is a delightful spoof that commits wholeheartedly to the bit. Imagine “Miami Vice” transplanted to the Midwest and filtered through the rapid-fire absurdity of “Airplane!and you’ve got a good sense of the show’s playfully ridiculous energy.

The story follows two lone-wolf narcotics agents who reluctantly team up to dismantle Kansas City’s criminal drug underground. The plot is intentionally over-the-top, serving as the perfect framework for a nonstop barrage of visual gags, improbable action sequences, and relentless one-liners.

Between scenes, video montages featuring Kansas City in the iconic Miami Vice scenic areal shots, complete with tropical palm trees, glowing skylines, and yacht life. The contrast between the city’s familiar landmarks and its reimagined Miami persona becomes a recurring gag.

The cast embraces the show’s camp with infectious enthusiasm. Every performer is fully committed to the heightened style, delivering exaggerated action-hero swagger or villainous intimidation while never winking at the audience.  An evening of big laughs and unapologetic silliness, the show finds a true heart as it concludes with an unexpected and meaningful reminder that community change begins with simple acts of kindness.

Kansas City: Magnum Vice delivers exactly what Fringe audiences hope to find: bold creativity, fearless performances, inventive comedy, and a willingness to be gloriously absurd. It’s a fast-paced, laugh-filled celebration of parody that leaves audiences smiling long after the final curtain.
