Who Am I Again?
Chelsey Shirrell

“Who Am I Again?” is a vulnerable and honest story that offered a perspective I hadn’t experienced before.

Without giving too much away, Lethan takes audiences back to the day of the accident that caused his traumatic brain injury, sharing glimpses of the experience through his own eyes as well as the perspectives of the people who cared for him. Throughout the performance, he seamlessly shifts between multiple characters, giving each a distinct voice and personality. At no point did I find myself confused about who was speaking, which is no small feat in a one-person production.

What stayed with me most, though, was the perspective the show offered. It’s one thing to hear about traumatic brain injuries. It’s another to hear someone share their own lived experience with honesty, vulnerability, and even moments of humor.

I left the theatre with a greater appreciation for the challenges people with TBIs face, not only during recovery but also in the ways they’re often perceived and treated by others. Every 21 seconds, someone in the United States sustains a traumatic brain injury. This production is a reminder that any one of our lives can change in an instant. Theatre has a unique ability to build empathy, and Who Am I Again? does exactly that by giving audiences the opportunity to see the world through someone else’s eyes.
