The simple joy of a well-placed rhyme,
With alliteration right on time.
Never forced, never dragging for show,
Just polished enough to let the language glow.
That same satisfaction runs throughout Michael Shaeffer’s “Everything Bagel.” His energetic collection of poems often feels less like a formal reading than an afternoon spent swapping favorite stories and inside jokes with an old friend.
Shaeffer’s performance is built on infectious enthusiasm. His rapid-fire delivery, animated expressions, and keen sense of rhythm transform clever wordplay into something theatrical. Whether riffing on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Stephen King, classic films, or vintage comic strips, he invites the audience into a shared language of pop culture that feels less like inside baseball and more like swapping favorite stories over coffee. Even the deepest cuts land because of the conviction behind them.
What makes the show work is its embrace of joy for joy’s sake. Rather than chasing profound revelations, “Everything Bagel” celebrates the delight of language and the passions that shape a person’s identity. As the performance progresses, moments of social commentary emerge naturally from the humor, adding welcome texture without abandoning the playful spirit that defines the evening.
The only slight interruption comes when Shaeffer occasionally returns to a notebook. Those moments are perfectly understandable, but they momentarily soften the connection created whenever he performs directly to the audience. His stage presence is so engaging that any barrier, however small, simply leaves the audience wanting even more.
Like curling up with a favorite movie you’ve seen a hundred times, “Everything Bagel” isn’t chasing life’s biggest questions. Sometimes an hour of sharp rhymes, smart references, and wholehearted performance is exactly enough—and in Shaeffer’s hands, that proves immensely satisfying.
