Have you ever wanted to write a musical but you're not sure how? Don't turn to AI, get Fringey.

During the 2026 KC Fringe Festival, Ryan Hruza and his merry band of improvisers and musicians will be writing, rehearsing and developing a brand new Musical with YOU, the audience!! Each show, we will work with you to develop themes, characters, narrative structure and of course, musical numbers during the first 4 performances with the final show being a staged reading of what we create! Below are your call times and rehearsal agenda. (Don't worry, it's a show, not a class.

SHOW 1 - 7/18 - 6:30 - 7:30 PM

Introductions - Meet the team

Decide on themes, setting, characters, general narrative

Develop character relationships, wants and arcs

Write and create the opening number and first scene

SHOW 2 - 7/19 - 8:00 - 9:00 PM

Catch Up - Meet the team. Cast will perform what we have so far

Continue writing - Create an I Want song, decide on what happens next.

Revisions - Add any revisions to the first section based on what we develop today.

Catch Up (Again) - Meet the team. Cast will perform what we have so far

Continue writing - Group number and "glue" song. What brings this all together?

Review of Let’s Make a Musical

As a last-minute addition to the Fringe lineup, Let’s Make A Musical is a truly ambitious piece of performance art and adds the audience as just as much a valuable cast member as the musicians and writers on stage. The artists are tasked with taking the ideas for characters, plot lines, and story arcs from the audience and alchemy-like turning them into a full fledge musical over the course of their run. I went for night two and saw their opening number and inciting plot, then spent the rest of the hour working together with the cast and folks in the seats around me to help decide what should happen next. I have never felt so immediately invested in a stage performance, I will definitely be attending the next show just to see what happens next.

Review of Let’s Make a Musical

Getting to hear the first song and what was sourced from the audience from the first show was so much fun on its own. The rest of the show was the audience working with Ryan and the cast to figure out the “I want” song which he was writing *while* the audience gave input on what comes next.

What an amazing experience and a genuinely fun time!

Review of Let’s Make a Musical

What an interesting concept for a show. It was fun being part of day one of this process, with folks throwing out ideas and watching the creative wheels turn with the cast, both in terms of dialogue/story, as well as music and lyrics. Should be fun to see where this goes, and every show will be 100 percent different, guaranteed.
