Snake Oil & Tumbleweeds: A Commedia Murder “Mystery”

Snake Oil and Tumbleweeds Weeds: a Commedia Murder "Mystery"

Let's go WAY back to when a kiss of the hand was a kiss of death and the masters and servants were all dying to get married. Now, bring that forward a bit to the Wild West where the snakes are in the grass, the poison in the bottle is the hair of the dog and "NOBODY" knows who killed the town miser.

Creative Commitment to Characters

July 26, 2026

This show does a great job setting up the world with props, beautiful lighting, and excellent costumes and characters. The casts’ commitment to physical comedy and Commedia dell’arte was a welcome change of pace at this year’s Fringe. At times it felt like watching a slapstick cartoon, but there were many subtle jokes between the lines as well! I enjoyed my time and felt transported to another world!

10/10!

This was a super fun show to watch, and it was clear from the start that the actors had genuine chemistry and a complete understanding of their material and audience. No matter where you thought the next scene would take you, they always managed to surprise you. My only complaint is that I can’t see it again!

Don't drink the water!

But do be sad if you missed the funniest whodunit to whodunwhat since Bugs Bunny hung up the ears.

If Monty Python were American and in “Cowboy Times”

July 25, 2026

You are sitting front row center, staring at an empty stage. A masked man dressed in get up straight from the Wild West’s lost & found comes out, strumming a guitar.

Suddenly, you hear manic giggles and a cacophony of clomping footfalls coming from offstage. Then, from both sides of the stage, more masked actors start trotting into the light, carrying basic wooden furniture, making loud squawking noises and wordlessly arrange the pieces into what we would be asked to imagine as a dusty podunk town set in “Cowboy Times.”

As odd as this might seem, it only gets more absurd as the show goes on – in the best possible way.

The dialogue was so funny and combined with the slapstick aspects – it was just perfection.

I’m a huge fan of absurdist-meets-slapstick comedy, like Benny Hill or Monty Python. If you are too, then you would really love this show.

I hope that it is performed again someday – I want more people in my life to get to experience the same joy that I did during the final ‘26 Fringe performance.

True to form

July 25, 2026

Commedia is the root form of broad slapstick comedy throughout the ages. Right up to Benny Hill and the Minions, it’s still alive in this production of a western murder mystery. I laughed and giggled many times and, when not doing that, I was smiling. A lot. A truly enjoyable show.
