Are you looking for a show full of surprising twists and turns? Look no further. Circus Scorpius presents “Crossed Cutlasses” at the City Stage. This performance is great for all ages as the story is easy to follow and the excitement is delightful. “Crossed Cutlasses” uses aerial acts, dance, narration, music and circus tricks to further the plot line and capture your attention.

The performance follows two pirate crews led by captains Ruby Redwater and Sutton Stormbreaker as they battle for lucrative control over a small portion of the Caribbean Sea. But, these battles are not typical and include startling challenges of air and land. Follow them through ups and downs and across a decade of crew preparation, antics, and fierce training.

Performers use aerial apparatuses such as trapeze, silks, and lyra with skill. Others, more grounded, utilize beautiful materials to represent waves of the sea and motion on the ship. Costuming and makeup depicts the theme with accuracy and creativeness. Collaborativeness is a necessity as performers keep the narrative advancing. “Crossed Cutlasses” is at once an individual and full cast feat.

Circus Scorpius performers are quick on their feet and in flight. Strength and talent combine to launch you to the edge of your seat. Pirates stand fierce and sturdy even while juggling, engaging in acrobatics, or facing the competing crew. This show has something for everyone. Come for the story and leave, perhaps, wanting to take to the seas yourself.
