Help! I’m Trapped in a Musical

Reviewed by Chelsey Shirrell

I honestly don’t know how people do musical improv. Improv on its own is impressive enough, but adding music into the mix feels like it should be impossible. And yet this cast made it look easy.

What surprised me most was how naturally everything came together. The audience suggestions were woven seamlessly into the songs and scenes. It would have been easy for the show to feel chaotic or disjointed, but it never did. The performers listened to each other, built on each other’s ideas, and trusted one another enough to let the stories unfold naturally. The music director deserves just as much credit, adapting right alongside the cast and somehow making it all feel seamless.

More than anything, this show was a joy to watch. You could feel how much the performers were enjoying themselves, and that energy spread through the audience. I laughed a lot, but I was also genuinely impressed by how easily the cast could turn a random suggestion into a fully realized scene or song.

I think the biggest compliment I can give is that I will absolutely see it again. Since each performance begins with different audience suggestions, no two shows could ever be the same. That’s what makes this kind of theatre so exciting. If this performance is any indication, it’s absolutely worth coming back.
