Jerry Christ

review by Jamie Lin Pratt

“Jerry Christ” by Christopher Martin is a must-see for this year’s Fringe. This incredibly clever script presents the imaginary gospel of Mary Magdalene, edited out by the wizened old men who were writing the Bible. Martin played the titular role with several cheesy fourth-wall breaks in a sitcom-style performance. Brent Custer was heavenly (pun intended) as Jesus Christ, passing out snacks to the audience during his feeding of the masses miracle. Joseph, played by Mason Dredge, was tired of life as step-dad to the messiah, father to a not-so-great carpenter, and husband to a wife he was pretty sure cheated on him and faked immaculate conception. The real stars of this show are the Marys, Emily Michelle Walton (mother) and Grace Enochs (Magdalene), who also double as the bearded Bible authors. They perfectly balanced believable, realistic interactions in a campy environment. This show is rated R for profanity and sexual topics, so think before bringing the kids, but it’s definitely worth a babysitter. A very funny show with themes relevant to our current political and religious climate. Go see it!
