This is the second iteration of “Process: Inevitable” and I’ve been lucky enough to see both incarnations. This show has it all: drama, comedy, adventure, dance, and now musical numbers. We follow Iam’s journey from the 5th dimension as he encounters vices that impede his progress and hold him back from processing his grief. Each vice is represented by the colorful characters he encounters along his journey, and through each of their tests he must collect the 3 objects that will help him get back to the 3rd dimension.
I was seated up front and center and unfortunately still had issues hearing dialogue and some muffled sound cues. The action was often backlit with color, creating a beautiful and otherworldly sense, but the lack of front lighting may have also contributed to my hearing issue as faces were fairly dark throughout. The set pieces are cumbersome, but they make for a nice effect with the colorful lighting. The piece shines the most when the story is told through dance, but the songs undercut the clearer and concise storytelling from the first iteration of the show.
I can’t wait to see how this play evolves. Ace Lovelace clearly has something special with this piece, and it would be great to see the songs more developed. This is only the first part of the show, but it is still well worth a watch. Check it out at the Unicorn Theater – Levin Stage throughout the festival.
