Show Description
The Tim Mooney Rep presents its very first multiple-actor show! Tim Mooney has teamed up with five KC Fringe superstars for the KC premiere of “Breakneck Midsummer Night’s Dream!”
Tim notes, “’Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is such a frenzy of chase scenes, confused and love-potioned lovers that, to really do justice to it, I couldn’t do my usual One-Man Treatment. Written in honor of an aristocratic or royal wedding, the very impulse behind “Midsummer Night’s Dream” has always been to get the audience hot and bothered for Romance, Fairy Ribaldry, sexy innuendo and, to top it all off: an ass!
Cast and Crew
Tim Mooney, Maggie Killian, Shawn Murphy, Schmoo Cutlip, Michael Shaeffer, Beth Byrd-Lonski and Mallory Sabetodos Vance
Artist & Show Details:
I’ve done the KC Fringe a dozen times since 2009, always as a one-man show (UNTIL NOW). Those have included, “Breakneck Hamlet,” “Breakneck Comedy of Errors,” “Breakneck Romeo & Juliet,” “Breakneck Julius Caesar” and “Shakespeare’s Histories: Ten Epic Plays at a Breakneck Pace!” Some may also remember “The Greatest Speech of All Time,” “Criteria, a One-Man Comic Sci-Fi Thriller,” “Man Cave, a One-Man Sci-Fi Tragicomedy” and “Moliere than Thou” and “Dancing Nude!”
“In true Tim Mooney fashion, Shakespeare’s romantic comedy is expertly condensed… for a chirpy, whimsical delight that succeeds in making Shakespeare accessible to all.” Orlando Sentinel (Listed among “Best of Fest”)
“Highly Recommended” “You do not need your eyes anointed by the juice of a flower to fall in love with Tim Mooney’s ‘Breakneck Midsummer Night’s Dream.’… Think of it as “Cliff” coming to life and presenting his notes after a triple espresso. …wait ’til you get a load of his Bottom!” Lania Berger, Orlando Sentinel
“As usual, Timothy’s adaptation gets right to the heart of the story, includes all of the well-known lines (e.g., “Lord, what fools these mortals be”) and leaves me wondering what was cut because the story seems so completely and thoroughly, if quickly, told (and makes me think Shakespeare should always be an hour long). … If you need a traditional but quick Shakespeare fix at the Fringe, there’s no better place to get it than Timothy Mooney Repertory Theatre.” Jill Shafer, Cherry and Spoon (Theatre Blog) [Also named among Jill’s “Fringe “Favorites:” “Once again Timothy Mooney (here with five friends) makes a case for why Shakespeare should always be 60 minutes long, in this really fun and faithful adaptation of the Bard’s most popular comedy.”]
“In-between giving us generous helpings of both Shakespeare and some well-directed comedic stunts by a talented cast, even those who might normally shun the Bard as too highbrow should be jumping in line to check this one out. … They approach the show with the right mix of silliness, boisterous humor and good fun. Mooney, who plays Theseus, selected his cast wisely, and they have a ball going through this rapid-fire version of a Shakes classic. And believe me, this one is anything but “stuffy” Shakes. You’ll especially enjoy the magic forest they create. The show does have a touch of something magical about it.” Michael Freeman, freelinemediaorlando.com

If you love Tim shows alone, you are gonna adore Tim’s show with a cast. This was everything you come to expect from Fringe entertainment.

Tonight’s opening performance was excellent. Attempting Shakespeare during a Fringe performance is a wonderful challenge and this cast does remarkable work. They never dawdle, nor muddle, nor snore. They animate the world of Midsummer Night’s Dream, side by side with pretentious academic interruptions that have a cheeky little sense of humor about them. If you’re not usually into Shakespeare, Tim Mooney Rep will make you a believer. Honorable mention to Shawn Murphy: his Thisbe at the end of the show is worth sticking around for, it made me laugh so hard tonight!
Kurtis –
Fast paced production of Midsummer. I’ve seen several of Tim’s shows and it worked well with multiple actors. Great fun and worth seeing.

Timothy Mooney productions ‘s are always a great time. This one is another excellent work and the first one that I have seen with additional cast members. The entire performance was spell binding and captivating and a great way to experience a Shakespeare play! All of the cast provided excellent performances and entertainment with a generous touch of humor especially Shawn Murphy’s highlight action to end the play!

The best I’ve seen this season, destined to be best of Fringe, IMHO. Hilarious and poignant at once, the magic of live theater is on splendid display here, and tho I’m always intimidated by Shakespeare, this grabbed my attention from the first line, and left me stunned by the last, marveling that all these rich characters had been played by such a small cast of talented Performers!
If you’re trying to decide on which one of the wonderful choices to see at the Fringe this year, be sure this is on the top of your list!

I’m only surface level familiar with this play, but I really enjoyed this performance of it. It reminds me, in a good way, of what I enjoy about “low budget cosplays” – an homage, an affectionate interpretation done with intention but also self awareness and also not taking it overly serious.
I assume the humor of the original play lends itself to this but I would enjoy seeing other of Shakespeare’s plays approached this way too, just with joy and appreciation.

Interesting watching Tim not do everything himself. The cast was very good and the character switching was very funny at times. Great job everyone.

Midsummer Night’s Dream is already my favorite Shakespeare, but add in the element of it being told with just 6 actors and in less than an hour…let’s just say it was a glorious telling of it!

Fun fun fun. Especially watch for Pucks on verbal additions. Don’t get to distracted by the almost hidden antics.
David Luby –
Bravo! I was expecting to a complete spoof and ridicules show. What I got was a brilliant cutting of William Shakespeare’s comical masterpiece. Great job to cast and crew. Masterful use of prop and costumes pieces to change characters quickly. If you love the Bard you will love this show.

Quick, fun, and thorough! Plenty of laugh out loud moments.
Great work from everyone involved, special shout out to Shawn Murphy’s precise and varied performance.
