Show Description

Scott Cohen had the good fortune of having loving grandparents in his life. Although this is not a particularly unusual situation, his were highly unconventional; they lived life on their own terms. And it turns out, the ubiquitous presence of such people during one’s formative years can have quite an effect.

In this solo performance, Scott tells two stories about his childhood experiences. The first piece, “Colorful Grandparents and Black & White Television,” primarily focuses on his grandfather. The second piece (and the title of this show), “If it’s 7:30 in the Living Room, What Time is it in the Kitchen?” remembers his grandmother.

Both stories are unapologetically nostalgic. Scott has a predilection for nostalgia. He revisits memories from days gone by. It was a simpler time, when everything was more complicated. Although Scott thinks he is just a narrator telling funny stories from long ago, he discovers that the border separating the past from the present is not so clearly marked.

    Excellent

  2. K T (verified owner)

Fun show and brings back some good nostalgia.

  3. Mary Wilkens

(Writing for My husband) He loved this show! He found it funny and relatable, and sometimes serious. Overall enjoyable!

  4. Denise Decker

This performance is not your usual Fringe show. Scott relates stories about his grandfather and grandmother in a way that is sweetly sentimental, and funny when you don’t expect it. By the end of the show, it feels as if you know these quirky grandparents, and it will make you want to change the time on your clocks.

  5. Kit Wagar

This show is great. A witty, nostalgic look back at Scott’s wonderfully quirky grandparents and growing up in the 1960s and ’70s. I caught Wednesday night’s show at the Oasis and there were only 12 people in the audience. That’s a shame because this is a show worth seeing.

  6. Dave Black

    Very thoughtful show.
In hearing what Scott experienced, how he was raised and impacted by his grandparents, … you will find yourself having a fond memory or two about one of your loved ones. As I witnessed several people saying after his show, “Well, MY grand(father/mother)…”

Scott will make you feel, relate, connect some dots (both in his life and yours, even if your grandpa didn’t like tv as much or if your grandma doesn’t/didn’t have as many clocks as she had).

Scott is soft-spoken and near instantly likeable in this indearing show.

It’s a neat pleasure, including seeing some of the people’s faces as they exit the show. This is what the international Fringe phenomenon begun in 1947 is about. =)

Even if you don’t make it to his show (that he’s brought us from San Francisco, as he prepares to take this show to other Fringe Fests), say “hi” to Scott at the late night Fringe after-party, tonight and tomorrow.

Bring your family if you can, and maybe gift yourselves an interesting conversation after this show.

  7. Kelsey Coon

This was such a nice show! I came to it after happening to sit next to Scott at 2 other shows – just by chance! – and I’m so glad I did. He has the perfect blend of humor and poignancy, and it made me think lovingly of my grandparents and some of the laughs and tender moments we had together. His storytelling is clear and fluid, and it is obvious the subject is dear to him. Go see this show, and say hi to Scott!

  8. Morgan Simon

One of the most well-crafted and thoughtful hours of performance I’ve seen in a fringe setting. Scott takes you seamlessly between stories and jokes with total control of the room. He has the humor and pace of a story on This American Life. Highly recommend!
