Show Description

Looking Glass is a radical cut of Robert Greene and Thomas Lodge’s A Looking Glass for London and England, which was published in London in 1594. The play follows the biblical tale of Jonah focusing on the people of Nineveh. There are three distinct, hedonistic plots that weave together by Jonas’ arrival in Nineveh. A king living like a god that might marry his sister or her lover, a clown too invested in the philosophy of ale, and two men trying to dismantle capitalism after one loses the family cow. This is the first production since the theatres closed in 1642, and this production is very queer, very debaucherous, and uses the line between sex and religion as a jumprope.

Violet Mirage is a new theatre collective with this being its second production, and first under this name. Their first production, Studio Apartment, was written by founder Che Flory and had a tour across the East Coast early 2025. It is a modern queer tragedy following two portrait models illegally living in an artist studio dealing with whiteness, class, and sex. Archival recordings are available at cheflory.com. Looking Glass is the company’s first foray into the early modern canon, but it is sure to not be the last.

Super funny AND super horny!! What more can a fella ask for??

The ensemble was incredibly talented and handled the dense prose with ease. They were all able to switch seamlessly through several characters and honor the pace and passion of the story simultaneously.

I’m not very familiar nor interested usually in older texts, so I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable this show was and how much of it I understood. Great acting all around and special shoutout to Cory- his grasp of the language/clarity of dictation was sooo impressive and also he plays an amazing drunk. Bravo Violet Mirage!

  5. David Wheaton (verified owner)

I’m not a theater aficionado, but I really enjoyed all the actors’ passionate and talented deliveries, the smooth & fast-paced staging of scene changes, and the overall production skills that enhanced the interwoven stories. I loved the queer and ironic spin on a biblical story and antiquities still relevant and symbolic for contemporary times and issues.
